Transparency revolution to go on: Antony

Amid the growing voices against corruption and for greater transparency in governance, Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Wednesday acknowledged that the movement cannot be halted midstream, even as those in position remain unprepared for change.

“Our country is passing through a transparency revolution. The walls of secrecy are crumbling in every field: in politics, in administration, in judiciary, in business and even in journalism. The Government cannot stop [it] midway,'' Mr. Antony said at the Press Club of India.

He said the effect of this revolution would reach all walks of life. However, what was being witnessed at present was that the country, its politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen and armed forces were not ready for this transition, resulting in problems. Yet, he was optimistic that after a few years, the level of unpreparedness would come down, transition would go on and eventually transparency would enter all walks of life.

Commenting on the transient nature of politics, he said, those in power now could be in the opposition tomorrow.

Yet, while decisions have to be taken when in power, it should be exercised in a manner that is fair and balanced.
