Train passenger with explosives held

A large quantity of detonators and gelatine sticks was seized from a person travelling on the Howrah-Mumbai Samarsata Express in the early hours of Saturday. He was arrested at Adra station in West Bengal's Purulia district.

According to police, the explosives were being carried from the State's Maoist-affected Jangalmhal region to Raigad district of Maharashtra. Police are investigating the source and trying to ascertain whether the person had any links with Maoists.

Shamshur Haque Khan was carrying about 30 gelatine sticks and also a similar number of detonators when the Railway Protection Force caught him. A resident of the State's Bankura district, he had boarded the train at Malda junction, railway officials said. The 40-year-old, carrying a general ticket, was roaming in a sleeper class coach.
