The West Bengal government announced a Rs three lakh as compensation to the families of those killed in the derailment of the Mumbai-bound Gyaneswari Express.
Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta, who visited the accident spot, told reporters that the government would also bear the cost of treatment of the injured passengers.
Sixty-eight passengers were killed after the Maoists attacked the Howrah-Kurla train leading to its derailment.
A medical team and six ambulances were at the spot to treat the injured.
A forensic team had arrived as also Kokata Police personnel to assist the National Disaster team.
“The rescuers will be divided into five teams to search for trapped passengers,” he said.
Asked if Maoists were involved, the Minister said, “the CID has been asked to investigate. Unless the inquiry is complete, it will not be justified to make any presumption.
But prima facie, it seems to be a Maoist attack.”
