For every tree felled on the Vandalur-Walajabad Road and the Singaperumal Koil-Sriperumbudur Road, 10 saplings will be planted, the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNIDC) has submitted before the Madras High Court.

In its counter to a petition filed before the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice H.L. Gokhale and Justice V. Dhanapalan, the corporation said that Rs.52 lakh had been provided for planting saplings of avenue trees on the two roads. Petitioner M. Gnaneswaran stated that trees were being felled for widening the roads. He sought a direction to the authorities to plant new saplings and maintain them for a sufficient period.

In its order, the Bench said it had been accepted that a total of 3,488 trees had been cut.

The TNIDC said the saplings would be planted once the land acquisition process was completed.

The Bench said that it was satisfied with the counter and the petition was being disposed of.
