The Union Home Ministry has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to step up security at some major shrines in the State as a precautionary measure.
According to MHA sources, the Union Home Secretary chaired the meeting with U.P. Director-General of Police A.L. Banerjee and State Principal Secretary (Home) Deepak Singh Singhal, during which they were told to beef up security in Mathura, Varanasi and Ayodhya.
Central Reserve Police Force chief Dilip Trivedi was among those present at the meeting. The shrines are presently being guarded by the CRPF in coordination with the local police.
As part of the security arrangements, more closed-circuit television cameras and metal detectors would be installed and drills conducted to keep those guarding the places of worship on alert.
“These measures are taken periodically in view of the past incidents of terror attacks, particularly in Varanasi and Ayodhya,” an official said.
