A special investigation team (SIT) has arrested three police officials including former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manohar Singh for allegedly tampering with a murder weapon of a political leader’s son in Jammu, an official said on Monday.
The arrests were made late on Sunday night.
Amandeep Singh was shot dead at his home in Shashtri Nagar locality here Aug 29 by Jatinder Singh alias Raja, son of an influential businessman. Amandeep’s mother Deepinder Kaur was an eyewitness to the murder of her son.
Earlier, the officers were placed under suspension for their role in changing the murder weapon of Amandeep Singh, son of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Deepinder Kaur.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Jammu-Kathua range) Farooq Khan confirmed the arrests of the policemen. “Yes these officers have been arrested,” he said, adding further, “for their role in the period after the murder of Amandeep was under scanner”.
The other two officers who have been arrested along with the former SSP Jammu are station house officer of Gandhi Nagar police station Inspector Sultan Mirza and Sub Inspector Satnam Singh.
The SIT had also arrested Deputy Director of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Sarwar Hussain Bukhari for allegedly assisting in the conspiracy of the change of the weapon for a sum of Rs. 3.5 lakh, Mr. Khan said.
It was alleged that the police and FSL had changed the weapon and when this matter was brought to the notice of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, he immediately ordered the suspension of the officers and a probe by a special investigation team.
The SIT is headed by Mr. Khan.
