Facing instigation charges, TV journalist alleges conspiracy, resigns
The police have arrested three more persons — two in the city and one in lower Assam’s Bijni town — in connection with Monday night’s molestation of a girl, even as citizens braved rain to take out rallies demanding the immediate the arrest of all the molesters and instigators, and to protest the delay in taking action.
Seven persons have been arrested so far and five identified molesters, including the key accused Amarjyoti Kalita, are still at large. The police have announced a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh to anyone providing information on the whereabouts of Kalita.
The State government has constituted a Special Investigation Team to investigate the incident. The second officer of the Dispur police station, Subham Chandra Baruah, has been suspended for dereliction of duty.
Hundreds of people, led by RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, took out a procession in the city demanding the immediate arrest of all the culprits. They demanded that local television news channel News Live be banned. Mr. Gogoi alleged on Saturday that that a journalist of the channel Gaurav Jyoti Neog instigated the molesters. Mr. Neog resigned on Sunday from the channel.
Managing Editor of News Live Zarir Hussain said: “Gaurav Jyoti Neog resigned today to ensure a free and fair trial. But we stand by our report although we are ready to cooperate with the investigation process, and if anyone is found guilty the law will take its own course.”
Mr. Neog posted on his facebook account: “In the interest of the investigation and morality, I, as you all must be aware by now, have tendered my resignation to News Live…Yes, justice has to be done… if and when I am proven guilty, law should take its own course… I admit that the July 9 incident was a heinous display of humanity, and right or wrong, as a journalist I took the footage… which eventually became a national issue… It is by dint of those visuals that the culprits have been identified… It is a sad day for me, my friends and my family… But what is even more tragic, that in my efforts to expose the perpetrators of the crime on July 9, I myself became victim of a big conspiracy…”
All India Women’s Association general secretary Sudha Sundaram told journalists here that her organisation would pursue the case with the National Commission for Women so that the culprits got stringent and exemplary punishment. She underlined the need for the NCW to take a very clear and assertive role in all cases of violence against women.

NEWS LIVE is a household name in Assam,Mr.Gaurav Jyoti Neog's simple
utterance "I'm from NEWS LIVE,dare not touch the girl,I will flash your
faces on the TV" would have more than sufficed to deter the molesters
from doing the heinous act, moreover, his office was just a stone throw
distance from the spot to put him at risk of assault from those
men. There's always a serious doubt about his intentions and indulgence.
The bigger problem is that why do those youths acted as animals, why nothing in their values, culture, ethics stopped them ? Who is responsible for this degeneration of values.Force/Punishment is something that acts from outside but values ethics are something that acts from inside. They don't need anybody to enforce them. Imagine can you kick a man in full blood who suffered accident ? No you wont because your values does not allow you to do so. There is no law or law enforcing agency which is needed for this. Similar was the case with women few decades back who were treated with respect at least they were not molested like this in public, but the change in values of our society has destroyed that value barrier and such incidents have become common. Who is responsible for this ? everything that affects minds of the people, movies,Facebook,Internet, media,IPL etc.Yes they are responsible in the name of freedom of thought and expression this is what they have done to our society.
I beg the higher Authorities to ensure that all those who involved in this brutal and shameful act get the exemplary punishment.
Mr.Neog too has to be punished for his cowardness and disgusting act of taking that footage.
Mr.Neog, Will you do the same if one of your kin was in the place of that innocent girl? Just ask this question to yourself and whatever your answer is, you too deserve an equal punishment.
Whatever we discuss here, it is not the end unless someone take the action accordingly.
ensure that the victim gets justice, please save the humanity and give us some hope.
There is no need for the reporter to shoot the crime and he also cannot stop that incident alone. But he can inform the police or call somebody nearby to save that girl. He is the person who should be punished severely. He made money from a girl sufferings
Here this is what I call a Paradox situation. Journalist gets sacked since he covered the genuine news and got charged for instigating the culprits for horrendous crime live on TV. If for a moment I minus this journalist from the scene, could we prevent dreadful event? Simple Answer is big "NO". As he displayed the charater of some animal, live. The only doubt came into my mind, why he did not try to stop them? I might be assured with my assumption....If he would had....today might be we would not get those visuals rather we would have been listen his side of speech, which i do not think was enough to instigate our police and nation. Thanks.
The TV reporter's logic is horrible and unjustified. If he had tried
to stop the molesters right at the start, maybe the incident would
have never happened. Where is the question of accused being caught on
tape arises if the incident was not allowed to happen? But he didn't
interrupt molesters and continued shooting to get a cheap and
sensational footage for his TV channel. He never thought about the
trauma which the girl went through for those 40-45 minutes and which
would haunt her for many years in her lifetime. Shame on the TV
channel for giving ridiculous explanations to justify their cowardly
act. Worse enough, if this reporter is also the part of crowd, then he
deserves the severest of punishments under the law.
The case seems to be a repetition of "Love, Sex aur Dhoka" in an even
more terrible form. The Newslive TV channel originally aired the
footage with the title "Nuisance creating drunk girl beaten by mob".
When national TV took it up, Newslive followed them in seeking
punishment for the perpetrators.
A resignation by Mr Neog is not enough. He, along with his camera crew
should be the main accused. The Newslive channel should also be shut
down as a message to media, which thinks it can create its own news.
The accused should be given a fair trial and if found guilty, should be given toughest
punishment. It is mind numbing to see if a group of men did turn out to be a pack of dogs.
Molesting the weaker members of the society is shameful, disgusting, barbaric and tribalistic.
If India can not Call itself a decent civilized society if this happens anywhere.
its goof to see the reaction by the peoples but am upset why action
requires reaction
The incident that occurred on the street of guwahati was shameful. Has the peoples' mind became so narrow. As a guwahatian i can tell you that it was not like this before, but thanks to continuous telecasting of drunk girls by some news channels of the city, the minds of the people has become so. If someone was found in an inebriate state, they were identified and reported, especially if the person was a female. The news channel that reported this incident was present outside the bar as soon the attack began, as if they were waiting.
the Assam incident is actually nobody taken in to seriously . the Assam
C.M it as only `' unfortunate " , ASSAM top police brass commented
that they are like ATM machine to act quickly as that OF a machine
and the media 's role is yet to be ascertain , whether they acted for a
social cause or they for publicity and wants to make the whole thing as
a reality show . the public protest by the young ladies look like as
if they participating a procession for celebrating a foot ball match or cricket match . IT IS A UTTER SHAME FOR ASSAM AND THE COUNTRY
