The Odisha government on Sunday said the affected population in the flood rose to three million as floodwater entered new areas in the State.

Nearly half a million population remained surrounded by vast sheets of water in 460 villages, where over a lakh were desperately dependent on cooked food supplied by government.

The death toll in two subsequent floods also sharply jumped to 45 after district administration confirmed several deaths.

According to office of Special Relief Commissioner, situation was grim in Kendrapara and Puri districts where 195 and 112 villages respectively were reported to be marooned by floodwaters. On Saturday, the government reported 2.8 million people were affected by the flood.

The discharge of water into sea was also getting slowed down due to the full moon day. In coastal Kendrapara district, 2,36,703 persons were affected. Similarly, in Puri district, the affected population was estimated at 97,438.

The Kharif crop was also affected as water continued to submerge farmland. Around 3.22 lakh hectare of crop area was damaged in the flood.
