Under attack from the Opposition over his role in the appointment of P. J. Thomas as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said Mr. Thomas was appointed on basis of documents received from Kerala Government.
“Thomas was appointed on basis of documents.. There is no question of misleading anyone,” Mr. Chavan said in his statement in the Legislative Assembly.
“Kerala Government gave a letter on December 2, 2008,” Mr. Chavan said. Three names were recommended, including that of Mr. Thomas, he said.
Mr. Thomas was Chief Secretary of Government of Kerala in 2007. Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) had suggested three names — two retired officers and one serving — for the post of CVC.
The Opposition has held Mr. Chavan responsible for the fiasco over the appointment of Mr. Thomas as the CVC and has been demanding his resignation on the issue.
