Acting swiftly, the Pune police arrested early on Saturday the third accused in the case of Thursday's gang rape of a 25-year-old married woman.
Subhash Bhosale, who already has several cases against him, was remanded to police custody till April 8. When he was taken to court, women activists of the Shiv Sena threw bangles at him.
The other two, Ranjit Gade and Ganesh Kamble, were already remanded to police custody till April 6.
At 4 p.m. on Thursday, the woman hired a share taxi, a Tata Indica, from near the Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park at Hinjewadi, on the outskirts of Pune. She wanted to go to Bhandarkar Road, about 15 km from there, for an interview.
Bhosale, who was the driver, along with the other two men who pretended to be co-passengers, took her to desolate places in the city. The three raped her repeatedly for close to eight hours.
Permit revoked
Maharashtra Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has said the permit for the Indica vehicle has been revoked. He has directed the police to file an FIR against the owner, as the vehicle was misused.
The woman, an MBA graduate from Nagpur, had come to Pune in early March to look for a job.
