The Opposition meeting at NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s residence saw thin attendance on Monday, with key parties including the Trinamool Congress, the DMK, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party missing.

Another Opposition meeting, with a wider participation of the parties, has been planned for February 1.

The meeting was attended by Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma. National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, CPI(M)’s T.K. Rangarajan and JD(U) rebel leader Sharad Yadav were present.

According to sources, the parties discussed the government’s push for simultaneous elections. All parties present at the meeting opposed the move. “We discussed a host of issues about the present political situation, the meeting was inconclusive,” Mr. Rangarajan said.

Asked why other Opposition parties were missing, CPI leader D. Raja said it was only miscommunication.
