CPI(M) Kerala State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said The Hindu 's report on the opening of the vaults of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple in 1931 could be a pointer to the best course of action, at a time when objections were being raised over opening Vault B.
Citing The Hindu 's report, reproduced recently, Mr. Vijayan pointed out that the report had detailed how the vaults were opened in 1931 observing all the temple traditions, and how each object was assessed and documented.
The report had a reference to the loss of a basket of gold coins: it may have been used towards administrative expenses, he said.
Besides the articles that were part of daily rituals, there would be articles that may have been gifted by the people and amassed in the course of extending the borders of the Travancore kingdom.
Regardless of the way they came, there could be no doubt that these were all public assets, he said.
