The Hindu has registered a 20 per cent growth in circulation over a six month period in 2015, retaining its position as the second-largest circulated English daily, according to figures released by the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) on Monday. The Hindu’s circulation went up from 1,261,658 from January-June 2015 to 1,518,082 in July to December 2015. In the same period, the figures for third-largest circulated Hindustan Times stood at 1,166,382, and 1,301,139.

The ABC’s figues have also brought some cheer for the newspaper industry with circulation figures showing that the print medium is thriving and expanding in spite of stiff competition from television, radio and digital editions.

The print circulation of newspapers which subscribe to the ABC, which includes The Hindu , grew by 5.04 per cent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the last eight years. The growth is attributed to new titles entering various markets and expansion of existing titles through new editions and printing centers. The Times of India went up from 3,049,920 to 3,057,678 in the same period. Among Hindi newspapers, Dainik Bhaskar led the pack showing an increase from 3,669,616 to 3,818,477. During the same period, Dainik Jagran also went up from 3,182,160 to 3,307,517.

A press release from ABC, said most member publications, across various languages, certified by ABC have shown a positive trend during this period.

ABC has been certifying figures since 1948 continuously over a period of 68 years, a process involving 90 chartered accountant firms.

As on date, 669 member editions and 50 magazines submit their circulation figures every six months for independent verification.
