Three years since it won the Lok Sabha polls in 2014, the BJP has managed to increase the number of States where it is in power to 18.
Outright wins
In 11 States - Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand - it has come to power on its own after outright wins
Support to ruling party
- In three States - Andhra Pradesh, J&K, Nagaland - the BJP is supporting the ruling party.
- In three States - Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Manipur - the BJP swung numbers in its favour despite being in a minority.
Manipur - The BJP was the second largest party behind the Congress (28 seats). It formed the government with the help of 32 MLAs (21+11) in the 60-member Assembly.
Arunachal Pradesh: The BJP snatched power from the Congress barely two months into its fresh term, when 44 of its MLAs defected.
Goa: Despite falling short of the majority and not even being the single largest party, the BJP managed to form a post-poll coalition to come to power.
