The only achievement of the United Progressive Alliance government in the last one year is misusing constitutional institutions for political ends, apart from discrimination against non-UPA State governments, Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the UPA government was surviving, courtesy the Central Bureau of Investigation. Whether it was the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Lalu Prasad, the Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh or in dealing with allies like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the UPA government was misusing the CBI “to buy political support.”

Describing it as “incompetent, indecisive and insensitive,” he said the government had failed on all fronts. Most of the ambitious programmes it promised to launch within its first 100 days remained only on paper. The most glaring “betrayal” was the failure to control prices.

The government lacked the political will to take forward the Women's Reservation Bill and other important legislation.

The report to be presented by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday should contain the promises which were made and implemented.

As for Naxalism, he said it was a political challenge and “the Centre and States must tackle this menace through a joint strategy.”
