Even as the row over a proposed memorial for Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray rages on, Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday said the place where Thackeray’s last rites were conducted was as holy as Ayodhya.

Mr. Raut urged that the structure that had been built at the cremation site in Shivaji Park should not be removed.

“The place where Balasaheb’s last rites were conducted at Shivaji Park is similar to Ayodhya. Its sanctity should be maintained. It is like a temple for us and we won’t remove the structure that has come up at the cremation site,” Mr. Raut told reporters here.

He asked the State government and the court not to intervene in the issue.

“We are not calling it a memorial. But we want the memorial at the Shivaji Park,” he said.
