The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday night arrested three persons, including a close aide of former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, in connection with the telephone exchange case.

Agency sources said a team of the CBI's Special Task Force which came from New Delhi arrested V. Gowthaman, former Additional Private Secretary to Mr, Maran, S. Kannan, Chief Technical Officer of Sun TV and K.S. Ravi, Electrician in Sun TV in Chennai. They would be produced in a city court on Thursday and taken into custody for interrogation.

The arrests were made to "collect some crucial evidence which may unearth during their custodial interrogation," a CBI spokesperson said.

The case pertains to allegations that a virtual telephone exchange was reportedly set-up at the house of Mr. Maran to enable data transfer benefitting Sun TV group owned by his brother Kalanidhi Maran. The CBI had registered a case against Mr. Dayanidhi Maran and some BSNL officials for allotting over 300 high-speed telephone lines for the purpose.

A CBI official said the operation was on in Tamil Nadu and more arrests would be based on the evidence given by the three accused persons.
