Electricity officials had connected an unused 11 KV lines with power to protect the wires from theft in Nalgonda district unmindful of the danger leading to the tragic death of an 18-year-old youth Nookala Naresh, who died of electrocution after coming into contact with it.

The incident happened at Chandanapally village located just 7 km away from Nalgonda. The lineman, M. Lalith Reddy, who was in-charge, claimed that they had given connection to the unused overhead line to prevent theft of wires by miscreants.

He told The Hindu that they had connected the lines with power as one of the wires was stolen by miscreants a few days ago.

Chandanapally village, located very close to Udayasamudram reservoir, was displaced a few years ago when the storage capacity of the reservoir was increased. These lines were meant to provide power to displaced village from Panagal sub-station, but the new village is connected to Pazzur sub-station, the closest one, making the 11 KV lines connected to the old village dysfunctional years ago.

Though the lineman claimed that the line has been connected, the villagers had no knowledge of it. The lines are located in the backwaters of the reservoir where the villagers usually go for swimming. Mr. Naresh too on Monday morning went for a swim along with his friends when he came into contact with the live wires.

The villagers had staged a protest before the electricity office in Nalgonda with the body, but they were sent back home by officials with a promise that they would take up the issue with the higher ups. But, no justice was done to the family members of Mr. Naresh as the officials have not taken any action against the erring officials so far.
