Two boxers from the district — K. Shyam Kumar and S. Marthamma — received cash award from the State Government for winning gold and bronze medals respectively in the National Games-2015 organised in Kerala early this year.

Minister for Sports and Labour K. Atchannaidu presented a cheque for Rs. 7 lakh to Shyam Kumar’s father as the boxer is attending the senior pre-Olympic National camp, and a cheque for Rs. 3 lakh to Marthamma here on Wednesday.

SAI coach and Dronacharya award winner I. Venkateswara Rao and DSDO N. Surya Rao were present.

Byragi Naidu, an archer who won a gold medal in the National championships, had received Rs. 7 lakh earlier.

Mr. Atchannaidu said that the cash awards for the three sportspersons from Visakhapatnam were part of the government’s policy to encourage sportspersons to do well in national and international meets.

The State’s sports policy would be ready soon and funds were being released to construct one stadium in each mandal , he said.
