Villagers seek closure of drug unit in Peddadevulapally

Villagers from Peddadevulapally, and people from seven neighbouring villages staged a protest at the district Collectorate here on Monday demanding the State government to shut the unit of Dr. Reddy’s Labs Limited located in Pedddevulapally.

Carrying polluted water in bottles, the villagers alleged that the groundwater was being polluted with the harmful effluents released from the industry.

Speaking on the occasion, sarpanch of Peddadevulapally village, S. Saidulu, said that they were suffering from various ailments as the air and water in the area was getting polluted with the harmful effluents were released from the industry. We have been representing the matter to the district administration as well as public representatives, asking them to close the industry, but their appeals fell on deaf ears, he said. The villagers later submitted a memorandum to the district Collector T. Chiranjeevulu who assured them to constitute a committee to enquiry into the matter.

Apart from Peddadevulapally, villagers from Gajalapuram, Abangapuram, Ailapuram, Goguvanigudem, Babasahebpet, Kampa Sagar and Pusala Pahad took part in the protest.
