Two killed in quarry blast in Warangal

Two persons were killed on the spot and four others suffered bleeding injuries when gelatine sticks planted in a quarry in Kothagattu Singaram village of Atmakur mandal went off suddenly on Friday night.

According to information reaching here, six workers employed in Srinivasa Crushers went to the quarry to fix explosives. They fixed the gelatine sticks and came out as the explosives did not go off in the prescribed time. However, the six entered the quarry again to check their status.

As it was drizzling slightly, suddenly the explosive went off due to lighting in the area. Kistaiah, (35) and Madhu (33) died on the spot and four others sustained grievous injuries. Kistaiah belongs to Akkampet in Atmakur mandal and Madhu hailed from Mandharipet in Shayampet mandal. The injured persons were Sammaiah, Raju, Sayanna and Madhukar. All the injured were rushed to MGM hospital in Warangal where the condition of one person is said to be critical.

Meanwhile the locals have demanded the officials to initiate action against the quarry owner for failing to ensure the safety of the workers. Atmakur police have booked a case in connection with the incident and are investigating.
