There is acute shortage of drinking water in the tri-cities of Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet.

The citizens are getting water supply once in three or four days, and they are tensed about the days ahead. The water levels in the summer storage tanks – Waddepalli, Dharmasagar and Bhadrakali tank – are depleting fast and there was no replenishment as of now. The situation in slums is pathetic, with people waiting for hours holding pots for the water tanker to arrive in their locality.

According to officials, the full capacity of Waddepalli lake is 135 MCFT. Presently, it is holding 101 MCFT of water, and 20 MCFT is considered dead storage level. So, there is only 81 MCFT of water available.

In Bhadrakali tank, there is 77 MCFT of water that can be used against it full capacity of 150 MCFT. The Dharmasagar lake can hold 839 MCFT of water, and of it 60 MCFT is considered dead storage.

Presently, 336 MCFT of water can be used from this tank.

Superintendent Engineer Abdul Rahman said every day they require 3.5 MCFT of water to provide water in the city.

“Even in alternate day supply plan, during the months of May, June and July 200 MCFT of water is required. We are planning to pump water from Devadula project to fill Dharmasagar and Waddepally tank,” he said.

Meanwhile, citizens are complaining that if the situation was so bad during the early days of summer, it would get worse during peak season.

The residents of Bhavani Nagar, NGO colony, Gudibandal, and Machili bazaar were experiencing acute shortage of drinking water.

“Water is being released once in four or five days in our colony. This summer is very hot. Children are also asking for water frequently because of the heat. So, the usage is more but the officials should take steps to provide water to us regularly,” said K. Jyothi of Machili bazaar.

Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari has already announced that Rs. 8.57 crore will be utilised to pump water to the Dharmasagar lake from the Devadula project.

The officials need to expedite the work before the residents come out crying for more water.
