April 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - SANGAREDDY:

Leaders of different trade unions demanded the government to take steps for the reopening of closed industries in Medak district. A huge rally was held in the town followed by dharna before the Collectorate on Monday.

Addressing the workers, CITU national council member J. Mallikarjun, HMS district convenor Narasimha Reddy, BMS district secretary Pradeep said that more than 3,600 workers became jobless as the Sirpur Paper Mills was closed down and have not received wages for the past four months and four workers already committed suicide. They have stated that closure of an industry at Warangal left another 2,000 workers unemployed. “Around 20 industries have been closed in Medak district in the past two years or so. The government has not taken any concrete steps to get them reopened or get the workers paid for what they are eligible. Even the labour department has been confining to holding meetings but failing to address the problems of workers,” they said. Leaders urged the government to come to the rescue of workers without any delay and prevent suicides. Large number workers have participated in the agitation.
