The government has proposed construction of toilets in all schools in Telangana by August 15 next year. The decision was taken at a meeting of panchayat raj, rural water supply and school education departments which was attended by Ministers K.T. Rama Rao and G. Jagadish Reddy.

A release later said Mr. Rao asked officials to take up construction of toilets on a war footing as a challenge by drawing up plans. He asked officials to furnish to him within a week the number of schools lacking toilets in Telangana. If need be, they could take the help of Collectors in enumerating the schools.

Mr. Rao recalled that it was on the suggestion of the Telangana government that the Centre hiked the unit cost of toilets up to Rs. 55,000 at a meeting in New Delhi last month. The State government will give additional funds to the Central assistance, he added. He stressed on quality control in construction and supply of water to toilets.

Mr. Jagdish Reddy said he will take to the notice of the Chief Minister the need to appoint workers to run the toilets, the release said.
