The Telangana government has urged the Karnataka government to release 3 tmcft of water from Narayanapur dam built across river Krishna. A three-member Ministerial delegation, led by Telangana Minister for Irrigation, Marketing and Legislative Affairs T. Harish Rao, called on Karnataka Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil on Thursday and submitted a memorandum seeking release of “at least 3 tmcft of water” as the bordering villages and towns in Telangana have been reeling under severe drought.
Mr. Patil said the government would consider releasing water to neighbouring district on humanitarian grounds. “I will take up the matter with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the officials concerned. A decision will be taken soon after assessing the availability of water and requirement of the State,” he said. On the execution of Rajaolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS), an inter-State irrigation project involving Karnataka and Telangana, being constructed across river Tungabhadra, Mr. Patil said the project work was expected to be completed soon. The RDS is located in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana and Raichur district of Karnataka. The second- and fourth-stage works of the project has been completed, while the first and third stage were under progress and would be put on fast track, Mr. Patil said.
Referring to the objection raised by the Andhra Pradesh government on increasing the height of RDS by six inches, Mr. Rao said “the matter will be taken up with their government and it will be settled as early as possible.”
