A police constable has opted for voluntary retirement from service to take up social work fulltime and spread Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideology among masses.

M. Jithender, a constable, decided to quit his job and tour villages explaining to people the importance of education. He has served the Police Department for 21 years and has been engaged in social work since the past ten years. Contributing from his earnings, he had donated books, uniforms and other infrastructure to students and government schools earning a name for himself. He applied for VRS in March and is likely to be relieved soon.

“I will get my pension and I will be content with it. My first target is to ensure that poor children in rural areas are enrolled into schools. Dr. Ambedkar had said that education is a solution to many ills in the society. I will campaign for literacy among poor and downtrodden,” he said.

Mr. Jithender was involved in rebuilding Pochamma temple at his Babu Camp Colony, erecting B.R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagjivan Ram statues, setting up of a library for youth among other charity works he has taken up so far. He desires to visit schools in villages and motivate students. Youth would be educated to utilise the welfare schemes being provided by the government and make decent career for themselves.

He has received national award from Bharitya Dalit Sahitya Akademi for spreading Dr. Ambedkar’s ideology.

Mr. Jithendar studied MA (English), LLM, B.Ed and MCJ. Soon after his degree, he joined the Police Department as a constable in 1995. “I am happy that I could protect the burial ground at Siddhartha Nagar from land grabbers. Once it was a five-acre plot but due to encroachments, it shrunk to 2.5 acres. When some land grabbers were trying to occupy it, I, with the help of Ambedkar Youth Association, approached court and revenue officials and stopped it,” he said.
