Indicating an early monsoon, the blazing sky suddenly turned cloudy and there was thunder and lightening here on Tuesday evening.

People cheered the sudden change with cool waves washing over the city. They ventured out to enjoy the first showers that followed a heavy gale. Darkness enveloped the city as early as 4.30 p.m. indicating heavy rains. However, there were intermittent showers while thunder and lightning kept making their presence for a long time.

The citizens wondered if it heralded the rainy season putting an end to scorching summer that was hard to deal with, this year. Going by the normal conditions, the intense summer was to continue till June second week.

Speaking to The Hindu , Medha Thanvi, a resident of Ramnagar, Hanamkonda, said she was thrilled by the sudden showers and enjoyed the cloudy sky after a long time. “We will go out and play if the weather is pleasant. We all like the rain,” she said with glee. On the other hand, children went out and played in puddles while drenching in rain.

The heavy gales that prevailed for about two hours bowled the citizens over, making things roll along with it.

There was fear among citizens that the sudden and occasional rain in summer might compound their problems. There might be intense heat after such a sudden rain. It would only suffocate people further rather cool down the soaring temperatures.

As the district was reeling under severe drought conditions, the sudden showers are expected to bring relief to people in rural areas. It might address the problems of shortage of drinking water and fodder for cattle while keeping farmers busy with farming operations.
