Former Congress Minister late R. Venkat Reddy’s wife R. Sucharitha, who lent active support to her late husband throughout his distinguished political career, is poised to make her electoral debut from Palair in the ensuing by-election to the Assembly seat represented by her husband twice till his death last month.

Congress sources said that Ms. Sucharitha emerged as the natural choice to contest the Palair by-poll not only to retain the sitting seat, but also to carry forward the rich political legacy left behind by her husband, who is a five-time MLA. Venkat Reddy emerged triumphant from Palair twice in 2009 and 2014.

The Congress leadership has reportedly chosen Ms. Sucharitha to capitalise on sympathy wave and avoid multi-cornered contests in the forthcoming by-poll. YSR Congress has already announced its decision to support late Venkat Reddy’s family members if they entered into the by-poll fray.

The TPCC leaders are engaged in last-ditch efforts to muster the support of TDP and the Left parties to their party candidate to avoid split of “anti-establishment” vote.

Ms. Sucharitha, the 69-year-old homemaker, is all set to venture into the electoral fray with the Congress leadership reportedly finalising her candidature for the by-poll, slated for May 16.
