Students of the Government Women’s Degree College here were taught the art of making eco-friendly Ganesh idols from natural clay at an awareness workshop held at the college on Monday.
The workshop was jointly organised by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board, the National Green Corps and the NSS wing of Kakatiya University to spread awareness on eco-friendly Ganesh idols among students.
Adverse impact
T. Radhika, National Green Corps Project Officer, Hyderabad, explained about the adverse environmental effects of the use of idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) and those painted with chemicals.
Sounding the warning bell, she said the immersion of idols made of PoP and other harmful substances in water bodies will not only lead to water pollution but will prove disastrous for the ecosystem as a whole.
She highlighted the advantages of using natural clay from water bodies in making eco-friendly idols, preserving water bodies, nurturing traditional eco-friendly practices and conserving environment.
NSS coordinator of Kakatiya University Prof. B. Suresh Lal and others spoke.
A similar awareness workshop was conducted at Recob Bazaar government high school here later during the day.
