Postal services in the rural areas came to a standstill following the indefinite strike by branch post masters, extra-departmental mail carriers and extra-departmental mail distributors in as many as 452 branch post offices in the erstwhile Nizamabad district from August 16.
Deliveries of mail, pensions and Employment Guarantee Scheme wages were badly affected. The beneficiaries have been going round the branch post offices and frenetically calling the BPMs and EDDAs for amount distribution.
Third day
Meanwhile, the strike being observed in response to the call given by the All India Rural Dak Sevaks’ Union, entered the third day on Friday. The demands included the implementation of GDS committee recommendations, sanction of civil servant designation to the gramin dak sevak (GDS) by providing eight hour work per day, provision of pension facility to GDSs in accordance to the judgments given by CAT principal bench, Delhi and CAT bench, Madras and stoppage of harassment of GDSs in the name of targets.
The striking employees who staged dharna in front of the Head Post Office here raised slogans and vowed to continue the agitation until the demands were solved. Congress cadres led by District Congress Committee president Taher Bin Hamdan expressed their solidarity with them by sitting in the camp for some time.
