March 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - KARIMNAGAR:

Following the tragic death of two migrant labourers from Odisha, who were found dead under suspicious circumstances after they escaped from the brick kiln in Andugulapalli village of Basanthnagar police station limits on Sunday, the Labour Department had decided to prosecute the brick kiln owner for violation of the Inter-State Migration Act of 1979.

Karimnagar deputy labour commissioner A. Gandhi along with his staff, revenue and police officials visited Sri Venkateshwara brick kiln industry on the outskirts of Peddapalli town on Monday and interacted with the migrant labourers. He also inspected the accident spot where decomposed bodies of the victims were found in the SRSP canal.

Talking to The Hindu , Mr. Gandhi said that living conditions of migrant Odisha labourers were very bad at the kiln. They do not have proper accommodation facilities, he noted. He said that the Labour Department had decided to prosecute the owner of Sri Venkateshwara brick industry, Shyam, for violation of the Inter-State Migration Act and other labour laws and failing to provide security to the labourers.

Stating that he would submit a comprehensive report to Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad on the living conditions of migrant labourers in brick kilns in the district, he said that the Labour Department and revenue authorities had decided to launch a special drive from Tuesday onwards to inspect all the brick kilns in Peddapalli revenue division in the first phase and later, visit all other kilns in the district. We will ensure that migrant labourers are provided all facilities as per norms, he said and warned brick kiln owners of serious action if they ill-treated labourers and failed to provide basic amenities to them.
