The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) demanded that the State government take initiatives for sanctioning new loans and waiving old loans simultaneously, so that it would benefit the farming community in the kharif season.

Addressing the dharna staged by party activists here on Friday, TDP district president and former MLC Arkala Narsa Reddy alleged that the State government has failed to ensure the sanction of new crop loans and waiver of old loans in its two-year rule. As a result, farmers were in a crisis. Both the farmers and bankers were confused for not knowing the policy of the government, as it did not waive previous loans. It announced loan waiver and decided to scrap it in four instalments spanning four years. However, in the third instalment it released only Rs. 1,000 crore as against Rs. 4,250 crore, Mr. Reddy said.

With regards to Nizamabad district, the TDP president said that out of a total of Rs. 1,950 crore to be scrapped, the government claimed to have waived Rs. 800 crore. However, not even a single farmer got a new loan till date. “Hence, our party demands the government give clear instructions to bankers for the sanction of new loans forthwith,” he said.

Mr. Reddy wanted to know why the authorities concerned deposited the loan waiver amount in a private bank instead of public sector banks.
