The budget was released for the year 2016-17 duly revalidating the unspent amount in the previous years, and an order was issued to this effect on Tuesday.
The government of India is implementing different plans in 34 districts in eight States, including Andhra Pradesh, to combat extremism. As part of this, Special Infrastructure Scheme (SIS), Scheme of Fortified Police Stations, Civil Action Programme (CAP), Integrated Action Plan (IAP), Security Related Expenditure (SRE) and Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Schemes were being implemented in LWE areas. Under MOPF, construction of model police stations, upgrading police stations, infrastructure development, improving technology, purchase of vehicles, development of roads under the Road Requirement Plan (RRP) and other works will be taken up in Naxalism-affected villages. The model police stations, also known as attack-proof stations, will have electricity, generators, solar fence, roof top sentry, rest rooms for staff, bell of arms and other facilities.
Attack-proof police stations
Recently, the Andhra Pradesh State Police Housing Corporation Limited constructed 14 attack-proof police stations in LWE areas in East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Guntur and Kadapa districts. LWE funds will be utilised for developing infrastructure, maintenance of Special Police Officers (SPOs), conducting welfare activities in Maoist affected areas such as organising medical camps, sports activities and holding meetings to wean away the youth from joining in extremism, particularly in tribal hamlets.
