Hyderabad police seized cash worth Rs. 10.80 lakh, an LED monitor, a laptop and 17 mobile phones after busting a cricket betting racket here on Wednesday.
While eight persons connected with the racket were arrested, the main bookies - Lucky Gaja and Gajanand - were yet to be caught, the Commissioner's Task Force Additional DCP N. Koti Reddy said. The key operative of the betting racket, P. Rajender Reddy of Hydershahkote, told the police that he realised that money can be earned quicker by organising betting on cricket matches when he met a bookie Gajanand of Karwan.
The duo approached another bookie Lucky Gaja, who explained how to accept betting on cricket matches from punters using WhatsApp. They had been betting on cricket matches for the past two years in this fashion.
On a tip-off that betting was being organised during the ongoing cricket matches of IPL 2017, the TF Inspector S. Mohan Kumar caught eight members of the gang.
