The Central government should formulate bilateral agreements with foreign nations to prevent them from issuing divorces in marriages falling under the Hindu Marriage Act, said State A.P. Women’s Commission chairperson, Tripurana Venkata Ratnam.
Referring to the growing number of divorce cases involving non-resident Indians who got married in India, she said that the Centre should intervene in the matter. NRI marriage disputes have really become a problem in recent times, she observed.
Speaking to newsmen here on Wednesday, she said as courts in countries like the US were issuing divorces as per provisions of local legislations, many women were suffering. Indian courts and other constitutional bodies too are not able to interfere, she added.
Ms. Ratnam appealed to parents who were eager to get their daughters married to NRIs to rethink their choice.
She also wanted that the importance of respecting women in society be included in the school curriculum at an early stage. We could do very little with legislations unless the mindset changes to prevent growing atrocities against women in society, he said.
Earlier in the day, she addressed a legal awareness seminar organised by India Social Services organisation. She wanted effective implementation of laws like Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. Warangal range DIG M. Kanta Rao, V. Balaraju of India Social Services organisation, ICDS officials Shailaja, S. Premalatha and others were present.
