Aggrieved residents of various residential colonies, including several slum areas in the town, staged a demonstration with empty pots and laid siege to the Municipal Corporation office here on Friday in protest against the erratic drinking water supply to their localities.
Scores of residents of Ramanagutta, Sundaraiahnagar, Nizampet, Rastoginagar, Saradhinagar, Ranganayakulagutta and other localities took part in the protest demonstration organised by the CPI town committee here. The protesters displayed empty pots during the demonstration in an effort to highlight the severity of the drinking water crisis. Addressing the dharna, the CPI town leaders alleged that several residential areas, mainly those situated in upland areas under the municipal corporation limits, were facing severe shortage of drinking water. They charged the civic authorities with failing to provide adequate drinking water either through taps or tankers, particularly in those areas which had been merged with the corporation in 2012. Other speakers lamented that many borewells in the town had gone dry due to the depletion of groundwater.
