Telangana Finance Minister Etala Rajender on Monday asked urban planners to put in place concrete and focussed systems to check illegal constructions.
“Illegal constructions should go. We should have rules and regulations in place, regardless of which government is in power. We should systematically remove hurdles in urban areas. Be merciless with whoever it may be,” he told officers at a workshop ahead of the eleventh Metropolis World Congress that is to be hosted by the government of Telangana, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Centre for Good Governance (CGG) here between October 6 and 10.
Representing the CGG and the National Institute of Urban Management, former Chief Secretary P.K. Mohanty presented an overview of the subject of urban development with reference to the Metropolis World Congress.
GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said the prestigious event was a first for India and for this part of the world too, representing an exciting challenge and termed it a good opportunity to juxtapose culture and tradition with modernity. There would be a lot of networking – B2B, government to government, social dinners and MoUs that would be signed, he stated.
