Activists of the Progressive Organisation of Women (POW) staged a dharna here on Monday, protesting the alleged cuts imposed on the allocation of subsidised foodgrains through the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC).

The protesters, led by POW State general secretary Chandra Aruna, staged a protest at Dharna Chowk here, flaying the alleged attempt of the government to drastically reduce the quota of foodgrains under the PDS.

Essential commodities

Addressing the demonstrators, Ms. Aruna alleged that the beneficiaries under the PDS were hit hard by the drastic cuts in quota of foodgrains and denial of supply of certain essential commodities like redgram, sugar, tamarind and edible oil through the PDS. The government should ensure supply of all the essential commodities at subsidised prices through the fair price shops in view of the skyrocketing prices, she demanded.

Activists of the Progressive Youth League (PYL) also took part in the demonstration.
