Rain wreaks havoc in Nalgonda

Rain lashed Nalgonda district, particularly Mellacheruvu, Mattampally, Damarcherla, Miryalaguda, Huzurganar, Kodad and Nereducherla mandals.

With the continuous rain in these southern parts of the district, crops in huge extent were damaged as rain water flooded the fields at many places. Many local streams are overflowing, cutting access between villages.

A lorry overturned and fell in to Buddhamadharam Vagu in Mellachervu mandal when the driver tired to cross the road wading through waist deep water. Luckily, the driver and cleaner were rescued by the villagers.

The road connectivity between Lingmagiri and Sarvaram was lost due to an overflowing stream.

Two houses collapsed in Garidepally mandal following continuous rains. Meanwhile, Munagala mandal received 40.4 mm rainfall, followed by Nadigudem and Mellachervu with 40 mm each. As many as 32 mandals out of 59, witnessed rain during the last 24 hours at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

Cotton, paddy, chilli farmers in southern part of district suffered huge losses. Paddy brought by farmers to agriculture market was inundated as rain water flooded agriculture markets at several places. The Musi is also flowing high over bridges at many places.

Inflows to go down

Meanwhile, the inflows to Pulichintala from local streams in Guntur and Nalgonda districts is expected to go down by Tuesday morning as no rain was reported in the upstream Pulichintala and downstream Nagarjunasagar on Monday.

Superintendent Engineer at Pulichintala, S. Chandrasekhar Rao, said that the inflows receded to 50,000 cusecs compared to Sunday’s about one lakh cusec inflows as Pulichinthala upstream area witnessed heavy down pour since Saturday evening.

However, he said that the water flow in local streams started receding from Monday afternoon.

The irrigation authorities here are still operating five crest gates by lifting them to two meter level, allowing 50,000 cusecs of water downstream. The water storage declined from Sunday’s 12.28 to 11.1 tmcft by Monday evening. However, Mr. Rao said that they would maintain 11 tmcft water storage in the reservoir and would release the remaining downstream.

However, four villages each in Nalgonda and Guntur - continued to be cut off from the outside world as the flood water is yet to come down.
