The District Medical and Health Department and Revenue officials have launched independent surveys to identify the number of persons, who have undergone appendicitis and hysterectomy operations in Jagtial and Sircilla revenue divisions.

Responding to a news item ‘Doctors fleece gullible rural masses in Karimnagar’ published in these columns on April 4, the Medical and Health department had launched a comprehensive survey to identify the people on whom the doctors performed appendicitis and hysterectomy surgeries when they approached them complaining of pain. They were also collecting details about private doctors who performed surgeries in Korutla and Jagtial town.

Pilot basis

On a pilot basis, the district medical officials conducted a thorough survey in Kathalapur covering all the 18 villages of the mandal and found that the doctors conducted a total of 583 appendicitis surgeries out of a total population of 47,000 in the last five years.

DM&HO A Rajesham told The Hindu on Friday that out of the total 583 surgeries performed, 238 surgeries were performed on children below 15 years. He said that they would prepare a comprehensive report about the surgery by Monday and submit the same to the government.

The medical teams were also collecting details from the womenfolk about hysterectomies conducted in Kathalapur, Raikal, Gollapalli and other mandals of Jagtial division. Similarly, the revenue officials also launched a survey for identifying the patients who underwent appendicitis and hysterectomy surgeries

Official sources said the number of appendicitis operations in both Sircilla and the Jagtial divisions would be in hundreds and hysterectomies in thousands.
