A priest, who had gone to perform a marriage, was thrashed for allegedly going late and not chanting the Vedic hymns properly at Palakurthi village under Basanthnagar police station limits on Saturday.

Reports reaching here said the priest, Senapathi Venkataramana Chary, arrived at the venue late where the daughter of one Erukala Rajaiah was getting married. Her relatives alleged that he was behind the ‘muhurath’ time and did not even chant the mantras properly. With they being in inebriated state, they picked up an argument with the priest and attacked him later while the ritual was performed by some other relatives.

Venkataramana Chary suffered injuries and was shifted to a government hospital for treatment. The police have registered a case.
