Contentious sharing of water and electricity between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh turned murkier on Tuesday with major political parties getting into agitation mode.

The day saw TRS workers burning the effigy of AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Nalgonda and Warangal districts, protesting what they termed as the conspiracy of Andhra Pradesh to stop power generation at Srisailam.

TDP calls for bandh

The issue reached a flashpoint when some TRS workers after burning the effigy of Mr. Naidu marched to the TDP office in Nalgonda town and ransacked and burnt furniture. Protesting the incident, TDP activists too burnt an effigy of the Telangana Chief Minister. Denouncing the attack, the TDP called for a district bandh on Wednesday.

In Hyderabad, the TRS legislators staged a dharna at Ambedkar statue on Tank Bund here. They charged Mr. Naidu with conspiring to deprive the people of Telangana of their rightful share of electricity. They pointed out that G.O. No. 69 that was issued when Mr. Naidu was Chief Minister of erstwhile AP stipulated that up to 834 feet level at the dam, power generation was possible and only when the level dipped further could the need to provide drinking water applied. The current level in the reservoir was about 860 feet, they said.

BJP protests

On Tuesday, the BJP stepped up its attack on the TRS Government’s failure to tackle the power crisis by holding demonstrations across Telangana, in all district headquarter towns. BJP State president G. Kishan Reddy and other leaders were arrested while staging a dharna before the Ranga Reddy Collector here.

Telangana Congress leaders took up the issue of power crisis and delay in waiver of farm loans to the notice of Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan. They urged him to ensure that the government took steps to overcome the power cuts and take all necessary measures to give relief to farmers.
