Tension in Bhadrachalam Agency as tribal communities spar

Police have initiated efforts to de-escalate the tension that gripped several villages in Bhadrachalam Agency following a series of protests by various Adivasi organisations alleging injustice in education and employment.

Dummugudem and Charla police on Tuesday summoned local leaders of the Adivasi organisations to the police stations and counselled them against disrupting the functioning of State-run schools in the Agency areas.

The trigger

The move comes a day after the activists prevented several teachers belonging to a plains tribe from discharging their duty at various Tribal Welfare Ashram Schools in Dummugudem and Charla mandals.

The Bhadrachalam Revenue Divisional Officer B. Sivanarayana Reddy and Assistant Superintendent of Police Sunil Dutt visited Dummugudem and Charla to take stock of the situation.

They interacted with the representatives of various Adivasi organisations, who were demanding protection of their legitimate rights enshrined under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution.

Rallies taken out

Meanwhile, members of the Adivasi Samkshema Parishat and several other organisations took out rallies in Dummugudem and elsewhere in the district.

The rallies and demonstrations were held in support of the bandh observed by Adivasi organisations in the erstwhile undivided Adilabad district in protest against the alleged attack on an Adivasi youth by a group of youths belonging to a plains tribe in Utnoor mandal two days ago.
