Police have cracked the bank theft case and recovered 34 kg gold worth Rs. 9.50 crore and Rs. 2 lakh in cash here on Saturday.
Disclosing the details at a press conference, DIG B. Malla Reddy and SP A.K. Jha said they took into custody Veluma Rama Devi in this connection. Her husband Rajendra Prasad alias Ramesh, who worked as a temporary messenger in the Bhupalpalli branch of Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank (APGVB), stole the gold and cash from the branch and also from the Azamnagar branch on November 15 around 3 p.m. According to Rama Devi, they engaged a car at Bhupalapalli and proceeded to Srisailam , carrying the booty. On November 16, they proceeded from Srisalam to Hyderabad and then to Basar. At Nizamabad, they sent back the driver after he refused to accompany them. The family went to Gadchiroli and from there, it went to their relative’s house at Mahadevpur. Rajendra Prasad kept the booty there, stating that it was a pack of clothes and sent his family back to Bhupalpalli.
The accused was still at large. The incident created a sensation as the quantity of gold and the cash that was stolen was huge.
