One person was arrested for allegedly hunting and killing a peacock - a protected animal under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, here on Sunday.

The Konda Mallepally police in Devarakonda mandal, which received the information through the locals, alerted the forest officials in the morning.

“The carcass of the bird has been seized and the accused taken into custody,” Mudigonda forest beat officer P. Shiva Kumar said.

It appears that the accused had destroyed the feathers to conceal the act, he said.

The arrested was identified as B. Chandraiah, a resident of Backward Classes Colony in the village. A daily wage labourer, he had gone hunting the previous night to the nearby Ghazipur area and returned with the ‘catch’ - a peacock, two rabbits and a few Indian pitta, the police said.

A case has been registered and the accused will be produced before the court on Monday.
