In a bid to draw attention to the issues plaguing State-run schools including the recently set up Gurukul educational institutions, the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) activists demonstrated near the Collectorate here on Friday. They demanded prompt response from the Government to address the grievances of the students.
A large number of PDSU activists converged at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue here to highlight their demands.
They marched together towards the Collectorate, where they held a demonstration at the Dharna Chowk. The PDSU State general secretary K.S. Pradeep led the protest.
Addressing the demonstrators, Mr. Pradeep alleged that the State Government opened dozens of Gurukul (residential) schools with much fanfare without ensuring proper buildings and adequate teaching staff.
Referring to the recent reported food poisoning incident at Velugumatla-based BC Welfare Gurukul School for girls here that left 48 students ill, he alleged that many of the newly set up Gurukul schools were beset with a host of problems mainly with cramped space in rented buildings.
The classes in several of these residential schools are being taken by contract teachers, he said, alleging that lack of proper supervision in the Gurukul educational institutions it had become a cause of concern for parents of the students studying in the newly established residential schools.
Some other speakers demanded that the Government implement its pre-election promise of free KG to PG education scheme for the benefit of thousands of underprivileged students across the State.
