Patriotic fervour marked the 70th Independence Day celebrations across the district here on Monday. At the main official function held at the police parade grounds, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari hoisted the national flag.

Addressing the public, he listed out the achievements made by the district in various fields including welfare and agriculture. In two years the Telangana as a separate State made rapid strides and the State Government was committed to improve quality of life of every section of the society.

In agricultural sector, the district administration succeeded in reducing the extent of cotton crop by 65,000 acres thus relieving the farmers from distress. Of the total area under cultivation 4.97 lakh acre, crops were raised in 3.84 lakh acre.

Over 400 employees of various government departments and NGOs were given appreciation certificates in recognition of their services on the occasion. Scores of children representing different schools presented cultural programmes depicting freedom movement and culture.

At the function held at Kakatiya University, Vice Chancellor R Sayanna unfurled the national flag and released the news letter brought out by the university. He said he would focus more on improving the quality of education and ensuring examination and announcement of results on time. At the CPI office in Balasamudram, Hanamkonda, district secretary T Srinivasa Rao hoisted the national flag and addressing the party men said even after 70 years of independence, the successive governments failed to tackle the poverty in the country. The fruits were not reaching the targeted sections. At the TRS office, district president T Ravinder Rao unfurled the national flag and listed out the achievements of the state government. The government delivered more than what it promised during the elections, he said.

Nizamabad celebrates

Nizamabad Special Correspondent adds: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated with gaiety and patriotic fervour across the district. The tri-colour national flag was hoisted all over on the public and private office buildings, schools and colleges and on the offices of the political parties.

District Principal and Sessions Judge K. Sujana hoisted the flag on the District Court Complex, Mayor Akula Sujatha on the municipal corporation office, Joint Collector A. Ravinder Reddy on the Pragathi Bhavan (Collector office) and Vice-Chancellor P. Sambaiah on the administrative building at Telangana University campus.

The national flag was also unfurled on the District Congress Bhavan, BJP district office, TRS and TDP offices by Taher Bin Hamdan, Palle Ganga Reddy, Eaga Ganga Reddy and Arkala Narsa Reddy respectively. Rallies, cultural programmes, prize distribution to the winners and runners-up in various competitions marked the celebrations.
