Officials told to be ready to face floods

All ration shops in mandals along Godavari to be well stocked

District Collector A. Murali has instructed officials to keep ready essential commodities enough for three months in all ration shops in mandals abutting the river Godavari.

He was reviewing the flood preparedness in the district with officials of various government agencies. People in mandals such as Palimela, Kannaigudem, Eturunagaram, Wazed, Venkatapuram and Mangapet would be severely affected in case of floods in river Godavari. Scores of people would be rendered homeless and deprived of food and water for days on.

Emergency material

The district administration proposes to keep ready swimmers, motor boats, torch lights, ropes and others emergency material. It was decided to set up special control rooms at district collectorate and ITDA project office with landlines phones.

“On June 23, one National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team will be visiting the villages along the river and come up with special instructions,” Mr. Murali said.

Flood levels

The District Collector asked the officials to paint poles of the bridge connecting Khammam district at Ramannagudem, in blue, orange and red to indicate the level of flood. He wanted the officials of revenue and health to stay put in villages and mandal headquarters to reach out to the people in need in case of emergency.

The revenue officials were asked to set up relief camps ready with all essential commodities. The health officials were instructed to keep the hospitals ready with all emergency medicines and staff whenever needed.

Joint Collector D. Amoy Kumar, ITDA PO A. Chakradhar Rao, DRO P. Mohan Lal, RDO Veera Brahmachary, Irrigation EE Ravinder, EE Panchayat Raj Madanaiah, DM&HO Appaiah, civil supplies officer Rajaram and tehsildhars of various mandals were present.
