The tragic death of a NSS volunteer, who accidentally drowned in a canal while participating in the NSS special winter camp in Mudigonda mandal on Monday, sparked protests by the activists of the SFI and other organisations here on Tuesday.

Karunakar, 19, a B.Sc first year student of the town-based SR&BGNR Government Degree and PG College, drowned in an irrigation canal at Lakshmipuram in Mudigonda mandal late on Monday afternoon.

Karunakar accidentally drowned in the swirling waters of the canal after venturing into it along with two others to take bath, sources added.

Karunakar hailed from a poor Dalit family of Konijerla mandal.

Meanwhile, activists of the SFI and Kula Vivaksha Porata Samithi staged a demonstration in front of the district headquarters hospital here on Tuesday demanding adequate ex-gratia, land and a job to the bereaved family members of the deceased. Later, a delegation of the SFI and other organisations submitted a memorandum to the officials concerned at the Collectorate in this regard. The authorities reportedly assured the delegation that all possible help will be extended to the family of the deceased.
