No takers for district status for Hanamkonda

August 20, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 10:09 am IST - WARANGAL:

The idea of Hanamkonda as a new district is being viewed as ‘ridiculous’ and ‘regressive’ by intellectuals and common people alike.

Hanamkonda is just part of Warangal city and there is no clear cut boundary that separates both of them. On a stretch of about 18 kilometres between Kazipet and Warangal railway stations, tri-cities exist as indivisible parts.

Social activist Prof. K. Venkatanarayana of Kakatiya University sought to know how can there be two district headquarters within two kilomteres radius.

“What kind of decentralisation is this? Warangal city, which is getting funds because of its heritage from the Centre, will lose that opportunity,” he pointed out.

A senior citizen and businessman Nerella Dhananjaya said Warangal will lose its sheen if it is divided. All the educational institutions - NIT, Kakatiya University, Kakatiya Medical College and all private colleges are in Hanamkonda. The people Warangal will be deprived and they would definitely launch another agitation for their due share. “There is no need for separate Hanamkonda district. It will only complicate things and more over there is no public demand for it like in Jangaon and Mulug,” he explained.

Prof.M. Vidyasagar Reddy of Kakatiya University opined that people are unable to stomach the idea of Hanamkonda as new district as it is part of Warangal city. Warangal is very old town and overcrowded, and Hanamkonda is just extension of that place. “How can one demarcate Hanamakonda and Warangal geographically? Moreover, Warangal as heritage and historical city will lose its sheen definitely,” he avers.

District Congress Committee (DCC) president N Rajender Reddy found fault with the State Government for dividing Warangal district in the name of reorganisation of districts. He alleged that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is trying to gain political mileage by the exercise. There are no funds and staff for the new districts. Governance becomes more complex in the State making it tough for the people.

K. Damodar Rao, Head, Department of English, Kakatiya University, says the idea to create Hanamkonda and Warangal districts is not in good taste.
